Topshop rides the Sartorialist wave, bringing integrated marketing to NYC
“What do bicycles, fashion, photography and the Internet have in common?” asks WWD. To that, I would reply, “Me!” Sadly, today’s WWD article is not referring to yours truly, but to the latest Topshop marketing campaign, which is so exciting and thoroughly integrated that I couldn’t NOT write something about it.
The Missing Day
During Paris Fashion Week, there were outfit gaps due to Tommy and I not running into each other and my half-show/half-appointment schedule.
However, on day 5 outside Dries Van Noten, as I was rushing in because I was heinously late, the lovely Garance snapped this outfit. I doth protested because this was my ’slummin’ it’ outfit, the outfit I was wearing to run errands and do appointments in.
Still, despite the fact that I was going casual with a well-worn checked shirt and comfy wedges (courtesy of Acne…. wins the prize for MOST comfy height-giving shoes ever…), I had to still assert the fact that I’m a shiny black magpie, as in I’m the sort of magpie that will always be an eternal lover of shiny black.
In this instance my Topshop PVC trews get an airing and despite the slum, I could not help but add a jewelled leather neckpiece. Black sequins, jet, jewels/gems, vinyl/pvc/leather, if it’s black and it glints, I’m onto it. Somehow, through a majority of my outfits, I manage to work some form of shiny black into it… me thinks a restraining order is needed soon.
Top Shop Autumn Winter 2008 Lookbook
Top Shop’s A/W08 Lookbook is out! While you may not be able to actually shop at Top Shop, you should definitely check the looks out.
They’re really great streetwear inspiration (albeit a bit too well-styled).
The Wonderland collection is a bit too Miu Miu SS08-esque and the Punk Couture collection looks like they just piled all the plaid clothes into a group, but the Bandstand and Boudoir collections are definitely worth looking.

Adventures in Copyright: Topshop Tops Itself
I’ve been ogling these Peter Jensen for Topshop loafers, left, for a while now. I loved the patent leather, but I didn’t love the price tag.
But now, thanks to Topshop’s ingenuity, I’m in luck. They’ve knocked off their own designer collaboration, right, and designed the exact same shoe for $85 less.
Let’s examine the (tiny) differences:
- Peter Jensen’s are a little shinier, but we don’t know if that’s a good thing.
- Peter Jensen’s do have that candy apple red while Topshop’s are a little more blood-stained.
- Peter Jensen’s seem to be a little better constructed.
Granted, these are pretty simple penny-loafers gone red patent and Peter Jensen nor Topshop are reinventing the heel, but come on, really? The only real difference, besides the price, is that the Peter Jensens are labeled as “designer” and Topshop’s can be found under “smart”…
